PANTOGRAPH CHARGING

Electric bus rapid pantograph charging systems

Electric buses can be fitted with a rapid pantograph charging system, enabling battery recharging both on-route (at stops) and at the depot supporting higher uptime and faster turnaround.

Pantograph systems can be implemented in two ways: the pantograph can be mounted on the bus roof, or on the charging mast itself (an inverted pantograph).

The existing infrastructure typically dictates which pantograph type is chosen. If a city already has chargers with overhead pantographs, operators often choose the inverted option, where only charging rails are fitted on the vehicle.

Pantograph chargers are street-side stations with an overhead framework above the roadway. When the bus arrives, contacts are lowered from the overhead unit and connect to rails on the forward roof of the bus, enabling high-power DC transfer for rapid charging.

iEngineering Group can provide higher-range DC charging solutions for electric buses. Our iPower series integrates the charger mainframe and pantograph into one elegant solution.

This system supports three functional modules: connector charging, pantograph charging, and back-to-grid (DC to AC). It is well suited for fast charging stations at route beginnings and terminals and can be customised up to 400kW.
